Plant Some Love!

Remember back when Mom used to tell you, "Just make me a card" when you asked what she wanted for Mother's Day? Well, she still wants that card, but the following craft project kicks the thought up a notch. A pretty, folksy flower pot makes a keepsake for Mom to treasure; read on to see how you can make this pretty present.

Materials You Will Need

Here's a list of what you'll need to create your craft project:
  • A ceramic flower pot (an older pot is fine, just be sure it's clean)
  • A plastic flower pot with drainage that's just smaller than the ceramic pot (make sure the plastic pot fits inside the ceramic one before buying)
  • A hot glue gun and hot glue sticks (be sure to supervise if working with kids)
  • Decorative pieces to glue on the pot (rhinestones, faux gems, pretty buttons, beads, etc.)
  • Spray paint in your chosen color, gold is nice
  • Potting soil
  • A plant that will fit comfortably inside when fully grown

How to Create the Pot

There are two ways to go with this project. You can paint it, then glue your decorations on. Or you can glue your decorations all over the flower pot and then paint. Both techniques produce a beautiful flower pot.

If you're going to paint it first, take your pot outside and sit it on a wide area of newspaper. face-up (If you're sensitive to aerosol vapors, you may also want to wear a protective face mask for this step.) Spray the entire interior of the pot. Allow to dry thoroughly. While the pot is drying, leave the area to minimize your exposure to the paint vapors.

Once the interior of the pot is completely dry, turn the pot over and spray the entire exterior, as well as the bottom of the pot. This is also a good place to write your child's name (or yours) and the year. Once it's fully dry, use your hot glue gun to glue on your decorations.

If you'd rather go for texture and color, then go ahead and glue on your decorations first. You don't need to be too particular about this step, as you will be spray painting over the entire area once you're done. Choose decorative bits that have texture so they will show prettily. Allow the glue to dry completely. Now use the above step to spray paint the point, you'll go right over the decorations.

Finish by hot-gluing special bits of lace or a few small ribbons to the outside of the decorated pot, just under the lip.

Presenting the Gift

You can give your mother her special gift as is, but it will be even more special if you fill it. Buy a plant or flowers that will grow only large enough to fill the pot with comfortable room for the roots. Give some thought to where your Mom might use the pot: if it's indoors then pick a plant suitable for indoor climates. If it's more likely to be on her patio, then pick a nice floral outdoor plant.

Here's a hint: don't place the dirt directly into the pot. Instead, choose a plastic garden pot just smaller than the size of your ceramic flowerpot. Fill the plastic garden pot with the bagged dirt and gently place the plant inside, being careful to disturb the roots as little as possible. Give it a good watering at this point, but don't over-soak. This will allow the plant proper drainage and preserve your keepsake pot

Mother's Day Card

Now find a beautiful Mother's Day card, we have lots to choose from, with a garden theme and personalize the copy and print from home. Attach the card with some twine and present it to Mom or Grandma on Mother's Day. It'll be the gift that keeps growing, just like your love!
